What Are The Symptoms Of A Tight Valve Clearance?

What are the symptoms of tight valve clearance? Tightened valve clearances typically do not produce any new audible noises. However, when the clearance between the intake valves becomes too narrow, it can lead to difficulties in starting the engine and result in poor idling performance. Similarly, excessively tight clearance in the exhaust valves can also lead to hard starting issues and, over time, can cause the valves to heat up to the point of potential melting, which is a situation best avoided. When Should I Replace My Dirt Bike Valves?

“When should I replace the valves on my dirt bike?” is a common question among riders, and the answer depends on various factors. In general, the lifespan of your dirt bike’s valves can vary significantly based on your riding style and maintenance practices. While some bikes may endure a couple of hundred hours with valves still within specification, this is less likely if you engage in competitive racing, where the engine undergoes more stress.

To ensure optimal performance and prevent potential damage, it is advisable to consider replacing the valves within a range of 40 to 60 hours of riding. One important indicator that it’s time to address your valves is experiencing difficulties during startup. Hard starting often suggests that the valves have become tight and are out of their specified tolerances. Regular valve maintenance and timely replacements are crucial for keeping your dirt bike in peak condition and avoiding more extensive engine issues down the road.

Once you know which valves to measure first, use your feeler gauge to check the gaps. Set your feeler gauge to the size it should be (you might need to combine two or more blades), then poke it in between the cam and the bucket; you’re feeling for a slight drag as you push it in and pull it out.Tighter valves will not make any new noise. When the intake valves get too tight they will cause hard starting and poor idling. When the exhaust valves get too tight they will also cause hard starting and eventually get hot enough to start melting – not pretty. Some bikes can go a couple of hundred hours with the valves still in spec, but that is very unlikely if you are racing. I suggest you replace the valves around 40-60 hours. Hard starting is a common indicator of at least a valve adjustment because they are tight and out-of-spec.
