Our research has shown that even a mere one percent reduction in rainfall can lead to a substantial decline in India’s agricultural performance, with a direct correlation of 0.36 percent. This means that when the monsoon fails to deliver its usual amount of rainfall, it can severely affect crop yields and agricultural output.

However, it’s worth noting that in recent years, there have been signs that the Indian agriculture sector may have developed some resilience to deficit rains. This resilience is illustrated in the figure above, which shows how the sector has adapted to cope with varying rainfall patterns.

Nonetheless, the implications of a monsoon failure extend beyond just agriculture, impacting various aspects of Indian society, including water resources, food security, and the overall economy. Therefore, understanding and addressing the potential consequences of monsoon failure is of paramount importance for the well-being of the nation.

Why is India prone to infrequent rainfall? Over the past four El Nino years, India has consistently grappled with drought conditions, experiencing a significant decline in precipitation levels. Monsoon rains in the region are notably affected by the intensity of El Nino events, which can range from weak to strong. For instance, in 1997, a particularly robust El Nino event resulted in India receiving 102 percent of its typical annual rainfall. This climatic phenomenon, marked by the periodic warming of the equatorial Pacific Ocean, plays a pivotal role in shaping India’s rainfall patterns.
